I think zero is naturally occurring because there are plenty of places in our universe where there IS nothing.
For example, outer space:
About .0001% (or something like that) of our universe is matter, meaning that the other 99.999% is empty space, namely, nothing. Because of this, it is safe to say that there is Zero matter in this empty space. I suppose you could argue against the theory that maybe what we call nothing means zero is the value present. For instance someone could argue that because something is nothing, it just means that we perceive it to be nothing. With our sense perception, we see, hear, feel, taste, and smell nothing. But zero could still be the false value.
Having said this, I still believe that zero is naturally occurring, however I will not argue against the theory that it might be an invention of the human mind.
I would have to disagree with you Zach. I think that zero is just an invention of the human mind. The human mind is what determined that there is .0001% filled space in the universe, the universe wasn't the one that determined that we have empty space involving zeroes. Zero, if it represents nothing, doesn't naturally occur, because if something occurs, then it is something. Hypothetically, Nature cannot state that zero (insert imaginary/non-real creature here) naturally occur in the wild, but the human can say that there are zero (insert imaginary/non-real creature here) in existence.
I believe that the number zero is a creation of the human mind. It is just another number and all numbers and mathematics were created by human beings. Once a problem is met humans try and find a solution or create something that will explain the occurance. While zero may be the representation of nothing, the representation zero was man made.
I would say that zero is a man-made construct. One cannot find nothing in its truest form within the boundaries of nature. The natural world involves the incorporation and removal of all kinds of elements but one may not be left with nothing in all of its patterns and processes. It is the human desire to quantify things that brought about the concept of zero because the combination of opposites in numerical value causes its presence to exist, and through no othe form can one find zero.
In my opinion it can be seem as both depending on how it's used. Using zero as a place holder in math is a human invention just like every other number used to represent an amount of something. Zero can be naturally occurring as well when talking about quantities if you say something like "I have zero dollars in my bank account". There is literally no money in the bank account. If you are arguing that the representation or identification of zero is man made then you would have to apply that to all numbers and languages. While the naming of zero was man made, and under some circumstances zero is used in a man made-way, like i said, when describing quantities zero is something that naturally occurs.
I believe that the concept of zero is an invention of the mind. Although sometimes some things do not exist, it was up to the human mind to construct the idea of quantifying nothingness. To quantify nothingness is to acknowledge the value that lies between a negative number (your balance of -25 dollars if you've over-withdrawn from your ATM account) and a positive number (your 3 tests scheduled on the same day). This value lies on the brink of either side, but it still manages to stay in the middle. This is quite an enigmatic concept, even chaotic by some standards. People need to find a sense of order in the midst of this chaos, and in this pursuit, they named it and defined it so that it would stump them no longer.
0 is a man-made construct. If something naturally occuring contains 0, it is non-existent. Everything within the universe is made of multiple dimensions. These dimensions are what constitute what is real and what is not real; it is what the natural world is made of. If any object takes up 0 space among any or all the dimensions, the object is non-existent. An example, if something contains 0 time, it was never there. All the things we know, all things that are must ecist to be a part of the natural world. 0 was created simply as a place-holder, and later evolved becoming a way of differentiating between existence and non-existence.
This idea is seen further in the fact that notohing can be destroyed. All that is in our universe remains in eternity; all matter is transferred as opposed to being created or destroyed. Energy is never lost, merely converted into various forms. The closest the natural world has come to producing nothing, or 0, is within a black hole. Even within these, matter is merely compressed into singularity, though this is the closest we have come to witnessing pure nothing.
To conclude, mathematics is a branch of science. It was created to help describe scientifc methods and theories. Within science, all has always been in the universe; there has never been a time of nothing. Wether compressed into a singularity, or simply existing amongst numerous dimensions and universes, nothingness has never existed and the ida of nothing has always been a human complex. As mathematics is created in the ideas of science, math and numbers follows the same ideology.
I feel that the number zero an invention of the human mind. Zero is similar to 1,2,3,4 in that it is perfect (0.000). I believe that nothing in the natural world is perfect, so therefore the number zero would have to be 0.003 or another decimal answer in which we would normally round to 0. Because I feel zero does not occur naturally then the only logical answer is that zero is an invention of the human mind. We created the perfect number 2 (2.0) along with other whole numbers. In addition with our invention of whole numbers we invented math where we discovered 2-2=0. Perfect.
